Guide

Marble coffee tables. What to know before you buy.

A marble coffee table is often the heaviest object in a living room, and the one that gathers the most marks. Glass rings, coffee, red wine. This guide covers what matters before you buy: how the table is built, what the stone does over time, and how to live with it.

01

Solid or veneer.

Most marble coffee tables are one of two things. A solid table is cut from natural stone blocks, with the veining running through the material. A veneer table is a thin sheet of stone glued onto a lighter core, often honeycomb or MDF. Veneer is lighter and cheaper. Solid stone is heavier, can be re-polished, and chips can be repaired.

Check the edge. On a solid table the veining continues over the edge. On a veneer table the pattern often stops or changes at the seam.

02

Weight and placement.

A solid marble top of 100 by 60 cm can weigh 40 kg or more, before the base. Decide where the table lives before it arrives. Moving it later is a two-person job, and dragging it across a wooden floor leaves marks. Felt pads under the base are worth the five minutes.

03

Stains and etching.

Marble is calcium carbonate. Anything acidic, wine, citrus, coffee left standing, reacts with the surface and leaves a dull mark called an etch. Etching is not a stain and cannot be wiped away; it is a change in the polish. Coasters help. A honed (matte) surface shows etches less than a polished one.

Sealing slows down staining from coloured liquids. It does not stop etching. Reseal when water no longer beads on the surface.

04

How it ages.

A marble table in daily use will collect small marks. On natural stone this reads as patina, not damage, and the surface can be re-honed or re-polished by a stone specialist if you want it back to new. If you want a table that looks identical in ten years, marble is the wrong material. If you want one that ages with the room, it is the right one.

Questions

FAQ.

Is a marble coffee table practical?

Yes, with coasters and a sealed surface. It tolerates daily use well, but acidic spills left standing will mark the polish.

How heavy is a marble coffee table?

A solid top alone is often 30 to 60 kg depending on size and thickness. Check the total weight before ordering and plan the placement in advance.

Can scratches in marble be repaired?

Light scratches and etch marks can usually be honed or polished out by a stone specialist. Deep chips can be filled and refinished.

Do you sell marble coffee tables?

Not yet. We make marble plinths today, and tables are planned. The plinths work well as side tables next to a sofa or armchair.
