Guide

Marble etching. What it is and how to fix it.

An etch is a dull mark where acid has reacted with marble. It is often mistaken for a stain. It is a change in the surface itself.

01

Causes.

Lemon, vinegar, wine, coffee, tomato, some soaps and many bathroom cleaners. Anything acidic left on the stone dissolves a thin layer of calcium carbonate.

02

Prevention.

Wipe spills quickly. Use pH-neutral cleaners. Put toiletries on a tray. On tables, use coasters. A honed finish shows etching less.

03

Repair.

Light etches on polished marble can be improved with a marble polishing powder. Deeper ones need re-honing by a stone specialist.
