Guide

How to remove stains from marble.

Most marble stains can be lifted with a poultice: a paste that draws the stain out of the stone. The right paste depends on the stain.

01

Organic stains.

Coffee, tea, wine, food. A poultice of baking soda and a little hydrogen peroxide (12 percent or lower), covered with cling film for 24 hours. On dark stone, test first.

02

Oil stains.

Cosmetics, cooking oil. A poultice of baking soda and water, or a commercial oil-stain poultice. It may take several rounds.

03

Water and limescale.

Water rings on sealed marble are usually surface deposits. Remove with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Do not use vinegar or descaler; they etch the stone.

Questions

FAQ.

Can I use vinegar on marble?

No. Vinegar is acidic and will etch the surface.

Do rust stains come out?

Sometimes, with a specialist rust remover for stone. Test on a hidden area first.

When should I call a specialist?

When a stain survives two or three poultices, or when the surface is etched as well.
