Guide

Is marble durable. An honest answer.

Marble has been used in buildings for thousands of years. It is also soft and acid-sensitive. Both are true. Here is what that means at home.

01

What it handles.

Weight, heat, water and daily use. A marble basin or plinth will outlast most other materials in a home.

02

What it does not.

Acids, which etch the surface. Coloured liquids and oils, which can stain if the stone is unsealed. Sharp impacts, which can chip edges.

03

Lifespan.

Decades. Marble can be re-honed and re-polished, so wear is reversible in a way it is not for most surfaces.
