Guide
Travertine and marble are both calcium-based stones, and both are used for basins, floors and furniture. They look and behave differently. Here is the comparison.
01
Travertine forms around mineral springs, which leaves pores and channels. Marble forms from limestone under heat and pressure, giving a denser crystalline stone.
02
Travertine: warm ivory to beige, banded, usually matte. Marble: wider colour range, distinct veining, often polished.
03
Both react to acids. Etch marks show less on matte travertine. Travertine is more absorbent, so sealing matters more. Marble is denser and takes a high polish.
Questions
Travertine is often less expensive, but price depends on grade, finish and the work involved.
