Guide
White marble is not one stone. Carrara, Calacatta, Statuario and others differ in base colour, veining and price. This guide covers the differences.
01
Carrara: grey-white base, soft feathered grey veining. Calacatta: whiter base, bolder and wider veins, sometimes gold or coloured. Statuario: bright white with dramatic grey veins. Calacatta Viola: white with burgundy veining.
02
Soft veining reads calm and works across large surfaces. Bold veining works best on a single object, like a basin or a plinth, where the pattern is the point.
03
All white marble etches with acid and can stain. Seal it. On white stone, marks show more than on dark, so a honed finish can be a practical choice for heavy-use surfaces.
Questions
They are similar in hardness. Durability depends more on sealing and care than on the variety.
It can. Seal it and wipe up coloured liquids, oils and cosmetics promptly.
